The 2012 Dodge Durango comes standard with seating for five, but most models can be equipped with seven seats by adding an optional third row. Reviewers appreciate the supportive driver’s seat and commanding outward view, though there’s limited visibility to the rear. The second row doesn’t slide forward or backward, but test drivers say there is plenty of leg- and headroom. What the auto press doesn’t agree on is the third row. Chrysler Group LLC is looking to the 2013 Dodge Dart to redefine what consumers think of concept vehicles.
“It’s moving the C sedan into a different place,” Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne told reporters after the vehicle’s unveiling at the 2012 North American International Auto Show Monday in Detroit. “I think it’s going to redefine what the segment will be, and I think others will either catch up with us or we’ll own the segment.”
Marchionne said the compact segment, which is 15 percent of the U.S. market is an area the Auburn Hills-based automaker has “neglected for way too long.”
The compact sedan -- starting at $15,995 when it goes on sale later this year -- will be available with a choice of three four-cylinder engines, some of them branded Tigershark. Two engines will use Fiat's MultiAir variable valve technology for better fuel economy.
The vehicle’s most fuel-efficient version will achieve more than 40 miles per gallon, according Reid Bigland, president and CEO of the Dodge Brand and head of U.S. sales.
Bigland, who Marchionne credited for resurrecting the Dodge Dart name from the 1960s compact car that the company produced for nearly two decades, expects the vehicle to help Chrysler continue its record sales, which increased 26 percent last year in the U.S. from 2010.
“There’s never been a more exciting time for the Dodge brand as now,” Bigland said before unveiling the vehicle at the Detroit auto show. “We’ve been working hard to make 2012 one of the best year’s in our history.”

Don't call it a Hornet. Dodge has released a slew of shadowy teasers for its new compact sedan, the 2013 Dodge Dart. The company is planning a slow reveal, with snippets of the four-door's exterior and interior trickling out between now and the vehicle's full unveil at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show. Specifics are still murky at the moment, though we do know Dodge will grace the 2013 Dart with a variety of engine options, including a turbocharged version of the 1.4-liter four-cylinder Multiair engine found in the Fiat 500. If the Fiat 500 Abarth is any indication, that means we're looking at somewhere around 160 horsepower.
The 2013 Dodge Dart makes use of the same bones as the beautiful Alfa Romeo Giulietta, though the chassis has been both stretched and widened to accommodate the wider britches of American buyers. Chrysler says that a full 68 percent of the vehicle's architecture is comprised of high-strength steel, which means the 2013 Dart should retain much of the rigidity that's made the Giulietta a favorite among buyers and critics alike in the EU.

Toyota takes just as much pride in the Sienna, which continues to sell well in the face of months of parts shortages due to the Japanese earthquake.
Right now, the two minivans are duking it out for sales supremacy, and Dodge is winning by a nose. Automotive News reports that Dodge has sold 92,930 Grand Caravan models so far in 2011, but the Sienna is down less than 1,000 units with 91,955 copies sold to date. And don't count out the Honda Odyssey. The Odyssey is a close third with 86,436 units sold, beating out the Chrysler Town & Country by 8,000 units. Chrysler can boast a combined 171,185 minivan sales so far in 2011, with 200,000 total 2011 sales within the realm of possibility.
With the Grand Caravan versus Sienna sales battle so close, we're guessing minivan buyers could turn out to be the biggest winners. It's a fair bet that one or both automakers will add incentives to the vans in an effort to secure the sales title, which will mean lower prices for buyers.

Chrysler Museum and the Museum has agreed to remodel its lower level lounge into a “Viper Café” themed space, which will become a semi-permanent exhibit at the museum. The Museum will feature a Viper from its collection in the café, memorabilia from VCA Founding President Maurice Liang's collection, and provide visitors with a historical recap of the car and the club.
Our goal is to raise $20,000 to pay for neon signs, diner-style tables and chairs, and a large mural depicting Viper owners gathered around their cars in the parking lot of the Viper Café. It's one thing to quietly anticipate the arrival of something exciting. It's quite another when you can actually see it coming, so here's a batch of spy shots showing the next-generation Dodge Viper under development.
Don't get too excited, though, because there's little to see from this early test mule. It's largely wearing the bodywork from the last Viper, and what's new is heavily disguised. What we can tell is that the headlights stretch back farther over the hood than the previous model, above the updated crosshair grille now in use across the Dodge model range. The placement of the air scoops and hood louvers appear different, and from what we can see at least, the front end seems to be more refined than its brutish predecessors.

2013 Dodge Viper Spied!

Freshly-minted SRT chief and avowed Dodge Viper aficionado Ralph Gilles has said there are Vipers running around testing a variety of components. And now, spy shooters appear to have caught one in the (snake) skin.
Yes, this is a previous-generation car being used as a mule. But, is there a better test-bed to use for future Viper technology? These photos also showcase the interior, which has a Bilstein sport button.
Dodge has been coy about the next iteration of its supercar, though the company has said the new Viper will have stability control and remains on track for the 2012 calendar year.
“We're in development,” Gilles said. “I think it's clear that it's on the way,” he told AutoWeek in June at Chrysler's proving grounds. He said that everything, from sound systems to stress braces, is undergoing testing (“Supercar Olympics,” July 11). Watch our exclusive interview here.
Meanwhile, the next generation Viper is expected to be run in international GT racing, and Chrysler has signed Riley Technologies to analyze the potential.
The future Viper is expected to incorporate technology from Chrysler partner Fiat, and dealers have said a prototype shown last year had Italian styling cues. A V10 powerplant was perhaps the signature trait of the old Viper, but Chrysler has not spoken publicly as to what the car will employ under the hood.
Dodge sold 392 Vipers in 2010--a fitting number for the brand, no?--its last year of production, which featured a slew of special models. The company moved 482 units in 2009.

Consumer Reports has gone and paid Chrysler a compliment by saying that the 2011 Durango and Charger are the company's most-improved models and, on the whole, the automaker's cars are getting better. CR even awarded both the V6 and V8-powered Dodge Durango a "Very Good" road test score, putting it in contention with the likes of the 2011 Ford Explorer. The 2011 Dodge Charger Rallye also nabbed a "Very Good" rating, which is comparable to the 2011 Ford Taurus and 2011 Buick Lacrosse.
Even the 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan walked away with the honor of a "Very Good" designation, but things aren't all lollipops and rainbows. Consumer Reports says that its testers were unimpressed with models like the 200, Avenger, Compass, Journey and Patriot, calling the vehicles mediocre. 2011 Dodge Durango is. From its overly curvy, awkward predecessor to this bold, in-your face henchman of an SUV, the new Durango delivers. It's luxurious, powerful and imposing. The only drawback is that the gas mileage is not great. But remember, you're driving a Hemi-powered fortress.
The updated Durango now feels like a utility-vehicle version of the Ram. That's a good thing. The pickup is one of the best-driving in its class, and this Durango now shares that dynamic. The V8 power is exactly what one wants in a vehicle this large. The 360 horses come on smooth, and this five-speed automatic is effective and efficient. Dial up more than 5,000 rpm, and this ute blasts off. Power from launches is impressive yet civilized, and the Hemi growls and purrs depending on what it's being called upon to do.
The steering is light, similar to that of the Ram, but adds satisfying feedback into maneuvers. The chassis is all-conquering, and I annihilated a pothole on the expressway without even blanching. This trench was the kind of obstacle that would have ripped the bottom off a smaller car. The Durango was unflinching.
The styling is beefy and taut. I like the way the sheetmetal fits yet still has some attitude. Whereas the old version was almost cartoonish, this one is well-tailored and sharp. The headlights are perfect, and the wheels are simply huge.
Inside is a smart black and caramel layout, and the white-and-red-accented gauges present well. You sink into these seats, and there's a commanding road view. The Citadel package marks the summit for the Dodge Durango. I'd take one for our long-term fleet in seconds. I like this muscle ute even more than I like our long-term Infiniti QX56, which is a tank in its own right. But the Dodge is pretty much just as blinged-out, looks better to my eye and costs $24,030 less than our long-term Infiniti. That's high-protein food for thought.
EXECUTIVE EDITOR ROGER HART: I would agree with Greg on liking this better than our long-term Infiniti QX56. Actually, I was stunned at just how good this new Durango really is. Think of this as a Jeep Grand Cherokee with a third row. I actually had two different people come up and ask me about the vehicle, what it was, etc. Both commented that it looked so good that they were surprised it was a Durango. That's a good thing, because the old Durango was, well, let's just say it didn't have anywhere near the refinement this one has.
I loaded this up with seven passengers for a trip to Michigan State University for my daughter's graduation, and a trip after to dinner. Even those in the way-back seats had nothing to complain about. I like the black and caramel two-tone treatment, and the seats are very comfortable. The Hemi underhood is strong and made no complaints as we loaded the thing up.
The Chevrolet Suburban/Tahoe is probably still the leader in the clubhouse when it comes to full-size sport-utes. But there is nothing wrong with this new Durango. It is so much better than the vehicle it replaces it probably should have had a new name. It is that good.

Call us partypoopers, but we're not all that big on parades. There's something about standing around only to see a bunch of floats passing by you that doesn't sound all that appealing. Now if said parade included a little unexpected action, we might be more inclined to enjoy ourselves, but we're not so sure the onlookers at the Washington D.C. Cherry Blossom Parade would agree with us.
After the jump is video of a spanking-new 2011 Dodge Durango Citadel as it sat in the middle of the parade route, spouting flames from the hood. A local NBC affiliate reports that the newly designed SUV began to spew black smoke while towing a float on the parade route. After the hood was propped up the black smoke turned into a full-on car-b-que that engulfed the engine bay in flames. The local fire department, which was likely already participating in the parade, later came and doused the blaze, but the incident prolonged the parade by about 15 minutes.
Hit the jump to watch the flaming Durango. We don't know how much the float it was reportedly towing towing weighed, and we also don't know which engine this Durango has under the hood. On the bright side, we didn't even know that the Durango apparently has a self-closing hood in the event of a fire. At the same time, whether it's operator error or a defect with the vehicle, having a brand-new SUV burst into flames in such a public way has to have Dodge reaching for the Mylanta. Either way, points to the band for continuing to play on! Thanks to all for the tips.

Don’t be alarmed if you think the 2011 Dodge Durango looks a lot like a stretched Jeep Grand Cherokee with a crosshair grille, because that’s essentially what it is. While the underpinnings are largely shared, Dodge tells us that the Durango is more focused on hauling people—it has three rows to the Grand Cherokee’s two—than crawling over rocks. And so while Jeep boasts about off-road capability, Dodge will play up the crossovery-ness and on-road performance of the Durango.
After taking a pass on the 2010 model year, the third-generation Durango appears thirteen years after the original model was introduced. Unlike the body-on-frame SUV it replaces, the 2011 Durango now sits on a unibody platform that it and the Grand Cherokee share with the Mercedes-Benz M- and GL-classes. The base engine will be Chrysler’s new 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 while the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 continues as the optional engine, just as with the Jeep. All-wheel drive will be optional, but Dodge won’t give specifics on what types of systems will be offered. We expect some sharing with the Grand Cherokee, with Jeep reserving for itself the more capable, off-road-oriented transfer cases. An optional air suspension also is likely for the Durango, especially given its claimed performance intentions and the availability of such a system on the GC. Towing capacity is quoted as 6200 pounds with the V-6 and 7400 pounds with the Hemi, which is down slightly from its truck-based predecessor. A trailer-sway-control system will be standard.
The styling is bold if a bit softer than the Grand Cherokee’s. The Durango finally loses the two-level front end that previously tied its look to those of the Dakota (on which it was based) and the larger Ram. Grille inserts on the model shown here have a chain-link appearance, and the front fascia extends low to the ground, giving a hunkered-down look and presumably helping with aerodynamics. There are striking similarities to the Grand Cherokee in the rear, with wraparound taillamps bridged by a chrome bar. We haven’t gotten a look at the interior yet, but we expect it to be very similar in style and execution to that of—you guessed it—the new Grand Cherokee.
This new Durango also marks the debut of a new Dodge logo. Recall that Ram has (sort of) been pulled out as its own brand within the Chrysler empire, and that the Durango will be lumped in with the car offerings. So Rams and Dakotas keep the ram’s head logo and the Dodge lineup goes to a similarly shaped crest with “Dodge” centered over crosshairs.
We also noticed that the Durango pictured here wears Citadel badges on the back as well as on the front doors. The folks at Dodge won’t tell us what Citadel means, but it’s clearly a trim level for the SUV—we’d venture to guess that it’s the highest, given all of the brightwork and big wheels. (The Citadel name previously was used on a Chrysler concept that presaged the production Pacifica.) Let’s just hope the other Durango trim names were selected with more thought than those for the rest of Dodge’s current lineup—recent trademark filings for Durango Heat and Durango Express do not have us hopeful, however.
The Durango will come with a full complement of airbags and also will offer blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-path detection, and keyless entry and start. It will go on sale toward the end of 2010 as a 2011 model. Based on our positive experiences with the new Grand Cherokee, this Durango seems far better equipped to battle the Honda Pilots and Mazda CX-9s of the world than anything that’s ever worn a Dodge badge.

It’s been a long wait since we first caught a camouflaged 2011 Dodge Charger rolling around. But our desire for fresh sheetmetal and an interior devoid of hard plastics has finally been fulfilled, as Dodge released its first official images and a few sparse details on the next Charger. Who’da thunk the car could get any angrier?
Meaner Demeanor.
Back in 2005, when the previous model made its debut, many decried the use of the Charger name on a sedan. If it was attitude the naysayers sought, they ought to be satisfied now. A larger crosshair grille is nicely accented by an enlarged lower intake and better integrated with the new hood—which is aluminum, and sports two scallops recalling Chargers of the late ’60s. The sharply creased hood lines and squinting headlights give the Charger a pissed-off, snorting-bull, I’m-going-to-destroy-you scowl. Moving to the side, the eye is immediately drawn to a scallop that again recalls the late-’60s Charger. The line’s execution is very striking, creating a natural shoulder that looks much less forced than on the previous car. The greenhouse adds to the aggressive demeanor with a faster windshield angle and a skinnier A-pillar. The beltline stays flat—as opposed to the dramatic upkick on the last car—promising better outward visibility. Dodge says the wheel wells are tighter, and filling them with the available 19-inch rims only tightens them further.
Cues from the ’60s give the stern of this animal more personality as well. The taillight valance gets a recessed look, but is fully modern in its functionality: the lights themselves are composed of 164 LEDs. The exhaust finishers are no longer an afterthought, but instead are integrated into the lower fascia on all models.
Dodge has yet to furnish an interior image, but we’ve caught a glimpse before and we know the company is promising premium soft-touch materials. A new steering wheel and a full host of technologies are on the menu, including Uconnect and navigation. Customers will be offered their choice of four interior colors.

Chrysler has just announced in an official press release that the Dodge Viper Cup Series will
be continued in 2011, with the first race to take place at Sebring International Raceway in

“The first season of Dodge Viper Cup series was simply awesome and a great learning experience,” said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO of Dodge Car Brand. “We’re going to keep building on that momentum in 2011 with an expanded contingency program, a reduction in entry fees and the continuation of our successful celebrity driver and charity payout programs to once again generate lots of serious excitement for all Viper enthusiasts.”

The specially-tuned Viper is powered by a 8.4l V10, developing 640 hp, 40 hp more than the regular production version. Of course, there are several differences as compared to the production versions, including the suspension which has also been modified and upgraded specifically for on-track usage. The weight has been reduced by 160 pounds, while additional aerodynamic upgrades improve downforce.

Dodge Viper Accessories. When it comes to topping out with American sports-performance, the Dodge Viper has been one of the first names motorists utter. First-generation Vipers rolled out for the 1992 model year with a 7.98L V10 engine which produced up to 400 horsepower and 465 pounds-per-foot of torque. The original version of the engine was comprised of cast-iron and proved to be too heavy for the car to support. In turn, the engine was redesigned by Lamborghini (then owned by Chrysler) and re-cast in aluminum alloy to make it light enough for the Viper's design to handle. The engine was mated to a six-speed manual transmission with power directed to the rear wheels. As for the vehicle's dimensions, the first-generation Viper measured in with a wheelbase of 96.2 inches, a width of 75.7 inches, a height of 44 inches, and an overall length of 175.1 inches. The body was constructed from tubular steel and fiberglass panels to provide a sturdy enough chassis without bogging the vehicle down in weight. Also in effort to keep the vehicle's weight at a reasonable number, the car came without traction control, ABS brakes, air conditioning, and other features more common in contemporary vehicles. The model itself was given a redesign come 1996, which also introduced the GTS, the Viper's coupe version. The Viper's body-shape didn't change too much, but the engine was upgraded for the second generation. It was still a 7.98L V10, but this time around the horsepower was increased to 450 (415 in RT/10 versions; come 2002, the RT/10 would also produce 450 horsepower). Once again, the engine was geared to a six-speed manual transmission. As for the model's performance numbers, the Dodge Viper now did 0-60 mph in about 4 seconds flat and 0-100 mph in 8.6 seconds, showing off a top speed of 187 mph. 2003 welcomed in another redesign, this time with the engine lighter by approximately 500 pounds but with more power. Both the GTS and RT/10 were removed from the lineup, leaving the new SRT-10. If you had to think of one word to describe this
1997 Dodge Viper you see above, what would it be? Beastly? Monstrous? Frightening? Aggressive? Intimidating? I wouldn't be able to think of any word for the simple fact that this car makes me speechless. I mean, look at it!
If Bruce Wayne and his alter ego was a gearhead that wanted to frightening the living bejesus out of his enemies then this is the car he's build. The rest of the car is pretty much dwarfed by this. What you're looking at is a stroked 510 CI Viper V10 featuring two Bullseye Power Borg Warner T-4 80mm turbos with a MoTeC M800 Engine Management System that was calibrated by Shane Tecklenburg. The result? Roughly 2000 horse power at 12 psi. No biggie.
The intake is the visually dominating piece of the engine bay (apart from the two giant turbos), its a CNC manifold that was designed by Marc "Koz" Kozeluh of Twins Turbo and Steve Hall of Hall Engineering and Design.
An engine producing so much power also produces so much heat. The engine was lined with gold in select spots as well as with the inside of the engine cover.
The interior is as spartan and utilitarian as you can get. It's border-line race car, but still has heat shielding and carpet! Remember boys and girls, this fire breathing dragon is still a street car. Though, what sort of streets this car was designed for, I want to know.
Fabrication done by Twins Turbo Motorsports and Andrew "Serge" McClelland. This is a car that you have to see in person to truly appreciate. the quality of the welds is one thing, but the creativity that was employed on certain aspects of the car is another.
For example, right under the exhaust sits a panel that can be easily removed with a few screws. That panel gives easy access to the pedals, their adjustment and their respective master cylinders. Most people wouldn't even think about that!
I'm not quite sure which look I prefer more, the car with the hood on, or the car with the hood off. Either option makes the car look extremely intimidating.
The body was painted by the now defunct West Coast Choppers.
An amazing set of red ghost flames adorn the whole car.
This was a real challenge to photograph as the red flames and the dark red hue of the car went completely black when not directly lit.
Back in September, the car was in attendance at the Mojave Mile event. It was easily the fastest car out by doing a pass of 222.7 MPH! You can see a video of the run here. The Mojave Mile was the first of many events this car will be going to. It's got its sights on the Texas Mile next.

Entry-level versions now offer a single, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, replacing the previous choice of 1.8-liter, 2.0-liter, and 2.4-liter options.
With a five-speed manual transmission, the 158-horsepower, 2.0-liter engine is rated at 23 mpg city / 31 mpg highway in the 2010 Caliber. The ratings are slightly lower in the pair of Jeeps.
Highway mileage over 30 mpg.
Last year's 1.8-liter and five-speed combination had returned a mediocre 24 mpg city /29 mpg highway in the Caliber. So while the new engine loses 1 mpg on the city cycle, it gains 2 mpg on the highway.
If you opt for the continuously variable transmission (CVT), mileage falls to 23 mpg city / 27 mpg highway (the same as last year).
Only one other engine is offered in the 2010 Dodge Caliber: a 172-horsepower, 2.4-liter four. With a five-speed, it achieves 23 mpg city / 29 mpg highway, and with the CVT, an unimpressive 21 mpg city / 25 mpg highway.Image by kenjonbro via Flickr
In either case, these numbers pale against competitors, from the 2010 Hyundai Elantra with a 2.0-liter four and automatic (26 mpg city / 34 mpg highway) to the 2010 Volkswagen Golf, which has a powerful 2.5-liter five and a 6-speed automatic (23 mpg city / 30 mpg highway).

The Dodge Caliber was introduced in 2006 for the 2007 model year. It is a compact sedan that replaces the Neon in the Dodge lineup. The model was first unveiled at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show before going on sale the next year. In reality, the '09 Lancer Ralliart – named after Mitsubishi's motorsports division in Japan – is more than "new."

You can't buy a Ralliart from the factory – yet. At least not until some time next month, when production models go on sale. The #905 Targa Ralliart co-driver Mark Hacking and I drove was a preproduction car, tricked out for this year's Newfoundland rally.

It's as if somebody flipped a switch – after 100 years of being effectively ignored, electric cars have become the focus of widespread attention, in large part because pending fuel-economy and emissions regulations will be difficult if not impossible to meet without them.

I'm not talking about today's hybrids, which generate their electricity on-board, but about battery-powered electric vehicles that can be recharged by plugging them into the electricity grid.

While several automakers have produced electric vehicles in limited quantities over the past decade, primarily to satisfy California emissions regulations, none to date has proven to be a commercial success.

The introduction of General Motors' much-publicized Volt concept car (see page W12) was the apparent catalyst for the sudden renewal of interest in plug-in electric vehicles, although it is technically a series hybrid with plug-in capability.

Shrewdly anticipating the utterly obvious and inevitable, Honda was ready for the recent spike in gas prices in all ways but one: It didn't have enough cars on the lot. Honda has had the highest U.S. fleet average fuel efficiency for the past 15 years and has, with admirable restraint, avoided stuffing gas-aholic V8's into the trim little noses of its cars.

So when people started panicking about fuel prices this year, there were the brightly lit and cheerful Honda dealerships, arising like Homer's rosy-fingered dawn. I went by my local Honda store a month ago, and it looked like they were hosting a cockfight.

The company's hottest product is the Fit, a small, modest, lumpen prole of a car that just happens to be one of the best-engineered vehicles on the planet. It tells us something fundamental about the changing tastes of the American market that Fit sales are up 73 percent this year, while you couldn't give a Cadillac Escalade away if you filled it with mermaids.

Honda has basically sold out of the 2008 model-year Fits and is rushing the new, redesigned 2009 models to dealerships earlier than planned. And -- here it is, drum roll please -- the fuel economy is 35 miles per gallon highway, 28 mpg city, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The Fit Sport won't do quite as well, with 27 mpg city, 33 mpg highway. That's what bigger wheels and tires (rolling resistance) and spoilers and side sills (aero resistance) will do for you.

After spending a day test-driving a 2009 Fit Sport in and around some of the tonier areas of the Los Angeles metro, I can report that the new Fit is slightly larger, vastly stiffer, noticeably more quiet and comfortable, and every bit as dorky-looking as the previous edition. Honestly, this thing couldn't get a date for the prom with duct tape and a burlap sack. But that's part of its counterintuitive charm.

I will say one thing for the looks: In the engineers' desire to give the Fit "Man-Maximum" ergonomics -- their phrase -- they have expanded the forward cabin area and raked the front window like the futuristic Honda Clarity fuel-cell car. It's cool. Also, by raising the headliner height, slimming the A pillars and enlarging the quarter windows, the designers have increased the outward visibility by 10 percent.

What's that all mean? The vibe from the cockpit is open, un-oppressed and glassine, a luxury of dimension in what is really a very small car.

When the Fit appeared in the U.S. in 2006 (it was already selling well in Japan), Honda rhapsodized about the car's "Magic Seat," which sounds like an endowed chair at Hogwarts but is actually the clever, multi-position rear seat mechanisms. These have evolved somewhat. Now, thanks to new flip-down headrests, the rear seat backs can be folded flat with just a turn of a latch, even if the front seats are pushed all the way back (i.e., you don't have to remove the rear headrests).

The 2009 car's additional millimeters of wheelbase translate directly to rear knee and leg room. I'm 6-foot-1, and I had no trouble moving from the driver's seat to occupy the left rear seat, what's called "sitting behind myself."
